Needless to say, there is quite a bit of confusion amongst many Muslims today when it comes to the halāl and harām of money matters. It is designed to give students the understanding required to be able to fulfill one’s financial duties to Allah with excellence. The course addresses the following questions and issues:
(1) How to give zakat properly, including on contemporary
financial instruments and investments?
(2) The fiqh of charity
(3) Providing for family, parents, and children
(4) Wills, bequests, and inheritance
(5) The halāl and harām of everyday transactions --buying, selling,
and dealings
(6) Making one's work, earnings, and spending halal and a means of
seeking Allah's pleasure
(7) What is ribā’, and why is it harām?
(8) The principles of Islamic finance
(9) Investing in halal ways and using contemporary Islamic financial
instruments
(10) Key contemporary financial issues, including Islamic
alternatives to ribā’-based financial products
By taking this course, students will understand what they need to know to fulfill their responsibilities in money matters, and how to practically bring the radiant example of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) into their work, earning, spending, and investing. Students will also gain an appreciation for the wisdom and benefit of the commands of Allah regarding financial matters and will get to value the clarity, depth, and benefit of the guidance of the Shariah in this area. They will also find out about contemporary Islamic finance scholarship, whom one should to listen to, whose answers to rely upon, and -- importantly -- what questions to ask, and how to distinguish between truly Shariah-compliant financial products and mere claims.
