This is the first course in the Islamic Law for Seekers (Shafi`i) series. The students will gain a detailed understanding of Islamic Jurisprudence (Fiqh) related to the acts of worship. The course is an explanation of a famous classical didactic text (matn) in Shafi`i law by Qadi Ahmad ibn al-Husayn al-Asfahani (Abu Shuja). This course is well-suited for those who already know the absolute basics of Shafi`i fiqh, but who are ready to further their knowledge.

There are numerous reasons why the science of fiqh is studied, but the major one for most people is so that they may attain to taqwa. It is essential that this science be properly studied as our intellect alone cannot arrive at this, it can only be learned from our Prophet (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him). Prior to undertaking an act, it is an obligation to first find out the rulings associated with that act. As such, studying the science of fiqh an essential part of every Muslim’s worship.

This course is concerned with the correct understanding and conception of the commands of Allah, including providing precise definitions of the various terms encountered when studying fiqh. The well-known text Ghayat al-Taqrib by Qadi Ahmad ibn al-Husayn al-Asfahani, aslo known as Matn Abi Shuja, is followed throughout the course and an English translation is provided.
