I Accidentally Swallowed Something While Showering, Does This Affect My Fast?

Answered by Ustadh Sufyan Qufi

Question

During Ramadan, I accidentally swallowed something while showering, thinking it was mucus but realizing it could have been water. Does this affect my fast?

Answer

In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate, Most Merciful,

I pray this finds you in the best of states.

No, your fast has not been broken because the basis is that your fast is valid, and mere doubt on its invalidity is of no consequence.

This is an application of this legal principle: “Certainty is not lifted by a doubt.” [Majalla]

This is, in turn, based on the following verse of the Quran: “Most of them follow nothing but conjectures. Surely, conjectures are of no avail in the matter of truth at all.” [Quran, 10:36] [Du‘ass, al-Qawa‘id al-Fiqhiyya]

And Allah knows best.
