Does an Internal Wind Break My Wudu?

Hanafi Fiqh

Answered by Ustadh Sufyan Qufi

Question

Sometimes it happens that it feels like there is something called an inner fart. Like it does not comes out; it happens internally or something. Does this break wudu?

Answer

In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate, Most Merciful,

No, as long as filth has not exited your body, you can be sure that you are still in a state of ritual purity and that your wudu is not broken. [Shurunbulali, Nur al-Idah]

Thus, you can ignore any internal movement in your body regarding purity.

Abbas ibn Tamim has reported that his uncle asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about a man who suspects that he passed wind during prayer. The Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) said: “He should not leave his prayer unless he hears a sound or finds a smell.” [Bukhari]
