Must a Woman Perform the Ritual Bath Due to Intermittent Flow?

Question:
Do women need to perform ghusl due to intermittent flow?
Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful and Compassionate
Assalamu ‘alaykum dear sister in faith,
It is normal for women to experience intermittent flow during their menses. The color and heaviness may also vary throughout a woman’s menstrual cycle. Women also experience patterns of flow.  For example, it is common that flow cease at night and resume later the next day. A woman becomes attune to her own patterns and may act upon what she deems to be probable.
Thus, if a brief interruption occurs during menses, during the days of her habit, she can reasonably assume that the flow will resume shortly, and she would not need to perform ghusl.
If, however, the interruption extends or occurs after the days of her habit, she should exercise caution.  She should make use of a vaginal insert (kursuf) to determine the end of her menses (hayd).
If she finds that the discharge is colored (even yellow), she is to consider it as menstrual flow (hayd).
The obligation to perform the ritual bath (ghusl) and resume prayers  would only come into effect once she observes uncolored discharge.

Is it Permitted To Wash the Body Only Once in the Ritual Bath?

Question:
Is it permitted to wash the body only once in the ritual bath?
Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful and Compassionate,
Assalamu  ‘alaykum dear brother or sister in faith,
What is required in the ritual bath (ghusl) is to wash the entire body as well as the mouth and nose, along with orifices that are easily accessed (i.e. the outer genitalia, ear piercing, and inner navel) This is required only once, but it is sunnah to wash thrice. [Shurunbulali, Nur al-Idah]
In wudu,’ however, washing of the mouth and nose is an emphasized sunna, and washing thrice is another sunna.
Please note, that while washing the required limbs in ghusl once is valid, it should not be made habitual.  Omitting emphasized sunnas without excuse is blameworthy, and consistent omission without excuse may be sinful. This is true for both wudu’ and ghusl.
Allah, Most High, knows best.

Does a Wet Dream Necessitate the Ritual Bath for a Woman?

Question:
Does a wet dream necessitate the ritual bath for a woman?
Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful and Compassionate,
Assalamu ‘alaykum dear sister in faith,
What you have described was experienced by the best of women, the female companions of the Prophet (Blessings and peace be upon them), and they asked the very same question.
So long as you do not see signs of sexual emission (mani) on your clothes, the ritual bath is not necessitated. Release of pre-sexual emission (madhi) would also not make the ritual bath obligatory. The same rulings that apply to men in this regard also apply to women. [Shurunbulali, Nur al-Idah 86,87]
Umm Salama, the mother of the believers, narrated that Umm Sulaym, the wife of Abu Talha, (Allah be pleased with them) came to the Prophet (Blessings and peace be upon them) and said, “O Allah’s Messenger,  Verily Allah is not shy of speaking the truth. Is it necessary for a woman to take a ritual bath after having a wet dream?”  The Prophet (Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him and his folk) replied, “Yes, if she notices an emission.” [Bukhari, Book of Ritual Bathing]
Sleep well. One who fears Allah in this world will be free of fear in the next.

Is It Necessary To Acquire Sacred Knowledge Before Action?

Question: Do I need to know the ruling of something before doing it?
Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful and Compassionate
Assalamu ‘alaykum dear brother/sister in faith,
Allah commands us to worship Him, alone, and to follow the Sunna of His Messenger (Allāh’s peace and blessings be upon him and his folk).  This requires knowledge.
It is an individual obligation (fard ‘ayn) upon every Muslim to acquire the knowledge of :
(a)   The Islamic creed
(b)  The Fiqh of Worship
(c)   The Fiqh of those matters that one encounters in their immediate (or future) dealings
This is to ensure that one does not fall into sin – in belief or action — without realizing it.
Make sincere repentance for any negligence in fulfilling this obligation, then devise a consistent plan on how to rectify based on the priorities mentioned above.

Do Sexual Thoughts Or Sensations Nullify the Ritual Washing (Wudu)?

Question: What nullifies Wudu?
Answer:

In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful and Compassionate,

Assalamu ‘alaykum dear sister in faith,
The release of pre-sexual emission (madhi) necessitates ritual washing (Wudu).
Sexual thoughts or sensations, on their own, without observing or feeling the release of pre-sexual emission (madhi) is not cause for the nullification of one’s state of purity.
You do not have to keep checking. However, if you do feel the wetness of such emission, then cleaning the private area and renewing the ritual washing (wudu) would be necessary before prayer.

Do Women Need To Complete Several Years Of Make-Up Fasts From Menstruation?

Question: Do women need to complete several years of make-up fasts from menstruation?
Answer:
n the Name of Allah, Most Merciful and Compassionate,
Assalamu ‘alaykum dear sister in faith,
Allah says,

Fast for a specific number of days. However, should any one of you be sick or on a journey, then (he should fast) a number of other days (equal to the missed ones). [Qur’an 2:184]
A woman on her menses is not permitted to fast, but it is obligatory upon her to make up the missed days of Ramadan. [Shurunbulali, Maraqi al-Falah]
As you are unaware of the number of days that are due upon you to make up, do the following :
(a)  Determine the longest menses (hayd) you have ever had
(b)  Multiply that number by 15
(c)  Attempt to complete at least two make up fasts per week, preferable on Mondays and Thursdays.
(d)  In this manner, you will have completed all of your make up fasts within a year or so
Turn to Allah in sincere repentance for having omitted these obligatory fasts. Ask Allah to assist you in lifting all the debts due to Him from upon you.
Consider taking the following course to learn the essential rulings of worship.
May Allah guide you to goodness.

He, Most High, knows best.

Does Vaginal Discharge Nullify One’s State Of Purity?

Question: Does vaginal discharge nullify one’s state of purity?
Answer:

Assalāmu ‘alaykum dear sister in faith,
The release of Leukorrhea, more commonly know as vaginal discharge, is a normal, healthy aspect of a women’s physiology.
Leukorrhea can be white, yellow, or green. Discolored discharge that is accompanied by an odor, irritation, itching, pain, or inflammation is abnormal and is usually a sign of infection.
However, the regular whitish or yellowish discharge that a woman experiences on a daily basis is pure in accordance with the sounder view in the Hanafi School. [Tahtawi, Hashiya on Maraqi al-Falah]
It is not necessary to remove it from one’s clothing before prayer. Its release would not necessitate ghusl nor wudu.

And Allah, Most High, knows best.

Is Wiping or Tayammum Permitted Due To Eczema On One’s Hands?

Question: Is wiping or tayammum permitted due to eczema on one’s hands?
Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful and Compassionate,
Assalāmu ‘alaykum dear brother or sister in faith,
After applying a moisturizer or other occlusive substance to the affected areas of your skin, you may lightly wipe over them with a wet hand. [Shurunbulali, Nur al-Idah, pg. 26]
If wiping is also difficult, then avoiding the affected areas is permitted.
However, as your eczema affects your hands and they are the tool for ritual washing (wudu’), if it becomes impossible to avoid undue pain or harm to your skin, then you may perform tayammum.
If, upon consultation with a physician, it becomes apparent that your condition is chronic, wearing gloves and performing wudu’ would also be an option. [Shurunbulali, Nur al-Idah, pg. 56]
