Supporting Islamic Scholars

The Messenger of Allah, peace, and blessings be upon him, said: “Allah does not lift sacred knowledge by removing it from the hearts of people. Rather, He lifts it through the death of scholars – until only the ignorant remain, confused and confusing others. – Sahih al-Bukhari

Seeking Protection with His Name- Shaykh Yahya Rhodus

In response to the fear and concern brought about by the recent spread of the Covid-19 virus, Shaykh Yahya Rhodus reminds us of the importance of seeking protection with Allah’s Name. In this important and timely reminder, Shaykh Yahya comments on the following prophetic duʿa (supplication) and encourages everyone to recite it daily:

بِسْمِ اللهِ الَّذِي لَا يَضُرُّ مَعَ اسْمِهِ شَيْءٌ فِي الْأَرْضِ وَلَا فِي السَّمَاءِ وَهُوَ السَّمِيعُ الْعَلِيمُ

“In the name of Allah, with Whose name nothing on earth or in heaven can harm—He is the All-Hearing and All-Knowing.”

Knowledge & Sacrifice Build Muslim Communities- Shaykh Yahya Rhodus

In this keynote address delivered at SeekersGuidance’s New Home benefit luncheon, Shaykh Yahya Rhodus explains the crucial role knowledge plays in bringing communities to life and the importance of sacrifice to spread knowledge. Shaykh Yahya begins by reading a memorandum on the state of our community and the challenges its leaders face, explaining how it fits into the agenda set by their illuminated teachers: “If you can’t plow seeds, so plow the land so that it is fertile enough for the next generation to plant seeds.” He also draws attention to the vision, foresight, and sacrifice of SeekersGuidance’s founder Shaykh Faraz Rabbani. Next, Shaykh Yahya stresses the importance of knowledge and religious education, necessary for holistic Islamic living in the world today. He highlights the importance of building and laying foundations, and the crucial role of institutions like SeekersGuidance in preserving the wellbeing of the community. Shaykh Yahya closes by reminding that knowledge is the number one way to bring a heart, family, community, and society to life. Knowledge should be an excuse for other things, not vice versa. We should make knowledge a priority—not only in seeking it but in supporting initiatives spreading the knowledge which gives one’s orientation in life.

Knowledge Is Only Spread Through Sacrifice – Shaykh Yahya Rhodus

At SeekersGuidance’s annual benefit luncheon, Shaykh Yahya Rhodus explains how true knowledge is only spread through sacrifice

Shaykh Yahya begins by reading a letter from a female scholar, explaining why she can’t attend his event, as she she is drowning in her community tasks. Few people are truly willing to help, she says, as they desire the deen but are unwilling to truly give what it takes.

Shaykh Yahya says that we live in a difficult time, and the way forward will only be through true giving and sacrifice.

“You and I are going to have to make a conscious decision: are we going make knowledge a priority or not? If we understand the priority of knowledge, then we will make knowledge a priority, not only in terms of you and I seeking it, but by supporting the organizations that have dedicated themselves to disseminating this knowledge, that brought qualified and as blessed teachers.”

“Make knowledge a priority. Make the support of educational institutions that are teaching the upcoming generations and all Muslims–how it is that we can live the realities of this deen—make that a priority. The survival of Islam is dependent on us. But I do not want to talk about it solely in terms of survival. What happens when you set before these great people, and you expose yourself to this knowledge, everything else starts to fall into place. You entire being starts to be oriented, and you start to experience what it is that an human being was meant to experience… This is the true life. The life of learning and putting knowledge into practice and experiencing its fruits. It is worthy for you and I to support it and I that hope you do.”

Shaykh Yahya Rhodus on Why YOU Should Support the Islamic Scholarship Fund

Shaykh Yahya Rhodus explains why the Islamic Scholarship Fund is relevant to our times, and urges us to  contribute to this amazing cause.

Assalamu Alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu,

I wanted to strongly urge you all to contribute to the SeekersGuidance Islamic Scholarship Fund, because supporting people of knowledge, qualified teachers, is one of the most important things that we can do. It is an obligation upon the community to free them up, so that they can spend their time disseminating Prophetic inheritance, which is really one of the most important things of all.

Many of the scholars that SeekersGuidance have been supporting, were it not to be for that support, they would not be able to teach their local community, nor would they be able to teach people from around the world.

So it is really important that you and I do our part and contribute to the SeekersGuidance Islamic Scholarship Fund, so we can free these great teachers, these qualified scholars, to teach students and to take part in this process of bringing hearts to life by dissemination of the Prophetic inheritance.

May Allah give us tawfeeq to do this, accept from us and open up the doors of His mercy for all of us.

Branches of Faith – 09: The Tree of Faith & the Believer – Shaykh Yahya Rhodus

In his second session examining the metaphor of the tree of faith, Shaykh Yahya Rhodus reflects on some of the connections between the natural tree and the faith of the believer. The roots of the tree of faith, he explains, is belief, and it is watered by Allah’s mercy. One’s obligations form the trunk of the tree, the recommendations its major branches, and so on. The tree is where heaven and earth meet, just as faith unites every aspect of one’s life. Just as the trees are the lungs of the universe, the believer can turn every situation into an opportunity for good.

Shaykh Yahya concludes by talking about spiritual deforestation: the believer is grounded, while modern man is not. He makes a compelling case for faith and holding onto the towering strength of our spiritual tradition.

This is part of the series presented in Ramadan 2018: “Branches of Faith: The Virtues and Fruits of Faith”.

It is narrated that Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Faith is seventy some branches”. In this series some of the leading scholars will cover and explain the different branches of faith, as they have come in the works of the Islamic tradition. The branches of faith include (1) branches of belief and certitude, (2) branches of spiritual works, and (3) branches of social excellence.

Branches of Faith – 08: Nurturing the Tree of Faith & Institution Building – Shaykh Yahya Rhodus

Shaykh Yahya Rhodus shares his viewpoint that in this phase of North American Islam, the most important priority is institution building and conveying the Prophetic inheritance. He reflects on the idea of the Tree of Faith as a metaphor from institution building. Beginning with the seed of faith, he draws links between nurturing the soil of the heart and modern destructive overfarming practices which produce dead soil.

Shaykh Yahya talks about nurturing our hearts, and how, just as trees don’t bear fruit overnight, nor do institutions: the results of one’s service might not appear for generations. He closes giving a few more insights related to the metaphorical Tree of Faith and shared meanings with the natural tree.

The Urgent Priorities for Muslims in the West – Shaykh Yahya Rhodus

In this critical and timely talk, Shaykh Yahya Rhodus emphasizes and highlights the urgency of the preservation and dissemination of knowledge, which is the Prophetic inheritance. He continues to explain that Imam al-Ghazali highlighted three principles in his magnum opus, Ihya Ulum al-Din (Revival of the Religious Sciences), that are meant to bring about renewal of faith in people: knowledge, devotion and service.

According to Shaykh Yahya, establishing SeekersHub and other institutions of Islamic knowledge is the most important obligation of this time and fulfills these principles. “Learning the sciences of the Sacred Law, with an unbroken chain in the established traditional way, while utilizing the beneficial modern methods and ways of instruction and making it relevant to the times we live in, in order to facilitate practice.”

He expresses that this is what he sees when he looks at SeekersHub, and that no one should underestimate their potential in bringing this matter to fruition. He explains that realizing this potential is through seeking great matters from Allah, through His Greatness.

Tribulations from a Faith Perspective – Shaykh Yahya Rhodus

Shaykh Yahya highlights that the greatest gift that we have been given, is the gift of faith because enables us to live a life of purpose. Faith is also the greatest gift we can give to the modern world in which we live. As people move further and further away from belief, resulting in a state of agitation and a state of panic. Faith (iman) is related to security (amn). With faith one finds security in their Lord who absolutely sustains and takes care of everything from its beginning to its fruition.

Shaykh Yahya reminds us that history is in good hands. The umma of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is granted mercy. There are many things of this deen and in this world that one cannot fully understand or comprehend the wisdom of, until they take into consideration the afterlife, and see how it plays out in the next life.
