What Is the Benefit of Fasting for 40 Days?

Ustadh Amjad Tarsin inspires us to rev up our Ramadan devotions, giving a reminder on fasting and Ramadan from the section in Imam Haddad’s Book of Assistance. He underscores the importance of increasing one’s good works, staying in the mosque, and performing night prayers (tarawih) in the sacred month. Next, he sheds light on the Night of Great Worth (laylat al-qadr), giving some pointers on which night it is. At the same time, he reminds that “it’s not a lottery,” and that Allah’s mercy is continually manifest in all of the odd nights. Finally, Ustadh Amjad discusses the recommendation of hastening one’s iftar and delaying sahur, while giving guidelines on how this is to be practically applied. He closes by highlighting some of the meritorious days on which to fast throughout the year and the great virtue of fasting in general.

Ustadh Amjad Tarsin continues the series “Embracing Excellence – 30 Steps on the Straight Path,” covering the Book of Assistance by Imam Haddad. Ustadh Amjad explains traditions of the Prophet Muhammad encouraging going to the mosque and chastising those who hold back from doing so. He also underscores the importance of the Friday prayer, even if one has work, shedding light on the immense value of these sacred acts and offering guidelines to judge whether one’s excuse in not attending prayer is genuine. Imam Haddad characteristically begins his chapter on cleanliness in the Book of Assistance not with outward but inward cleanliness — purifying the heart from character traits he describes as “vile”: envy, showing off, and so forth. And when he moves on to outward cleanliness, he first looks at purifying one’s outward from sin and adorning it with virtue, before moving on to discussions of ritual purity and outward cleanliness according to the sunna.

He explains the importance of remembrance from the Qur’an and hadith, as well as the importance of having a set litany of remembrance which one performs. Ustadh Amjad sheds light on some of the proprieties of remembering God, particularly that it involves both the tongue and heart. He also mentions many Prophetic invocations (adhkar) to be performed throughout the day, offering useful tips on how to bring these into one’s life. He closes with some of the virtues of sending prayers on the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).

Embracing Excellence – 07 – Acquiring Knowledge – Ustadh Amjad Tarsin

Ustadh Amjad Tarsin moves on to look at Imam Haddad’s chapter in the Book of Assistance on acquiring knowledge. He sheds light on the three core sciences necessary for the Muslim to understand and operationalize the Qur’an and sunna — beliefs (ʿaqida), sacred law (fiqh), and spiritual purification (tasawwuf) — in addition to hadith and Qur’anic commentary. He discusses the importance of gaining a sound foundation in sacred learning and recommends the practical writings of Imam Ghazali in particular. He cautions against reading high-level Sufi works (such as those of Ibn ʿArabi) which can be easily misunderstood leading to religious deviation.

Embracing Excellence – 05 – Regular Devotions – Ustadh Amjad Tarsin

In this episode, Ustadh Amjad covers the section from Imam Haddad’s Book of Assistance on regular devotions. After beginning with a reminder on the importance of structuring one’s time, he comprehensively examines the routines of worship a seeker should have in his day. He encourages us to value consistency rather than excess, outlining the various acts of devotion — prayer, Qur’an, seeking knowledge, remembrance, and reflection — that makeup one’s litanies (wird). He also discusses the inward and outward proprieties of one’s devotions, prioritizing the obligatory and sunna and acts of worship, and the virtue of night prayer and other supererogatory prayers.
