What Is the Ruling on Shaving Pubic Hair for the Deceased?

Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

Question: Assalamu alaykum

What is the ruling on shaving pubic hair for the deceased?

Answer:  Walaikum assalam,

I hope you’re doing well, insha’Allah.

The body hair and nails of the deceased are not cut, because such cutting is for worldly appearance—and the deceased has no need for that. Furthermore, the sunna with cut hair and nails is burial, as is the duty with the body, so cutting them would be redundant. [Ibn Abidin, Radd al-Muhtar; Quduri, Tajrid]

And Allah is the giver of success and facilitation.

How Should I Remove Pubic Hair?

Answered by Shaykh Abdurragmaan Khan

Question: Assalam alaykum,

I am very concerned with the manner of removing pubic hair and hair between the buttocks. What is the detailed manner to remove pubic hair and hair between the buttocks using natural methods?

Answer: Wa alaykum al-Salam

Shukran for your question.

RasuluLlah sallaLlahu alayhi wasallam advised in his hadith that one should shave the pubic area and pluck the hairs of the armpits. However, the scholars have mentioned that any method of removing these hairs will be permissible, if it does not harm the individual and if it does not require him or her to expose their awrah to others.

Regarding the hair around the anus, Imam al-Nawawi mentioned in his Majmu’ that there is no problem in removing it and depending on circumstance, it may be desired. Ibn Hajar in his Fath al-Bari said that it’s recommended to remove hairs from the actual private as well the anus.

And Allah knows best

Answered by SeekersHub Answers Service

Question: I would like to know which area constitutes the pubic region ( from which pubic hair must be removed). Are the testicles included ?

Answer: Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh,

I pray that you are in the best of health and faith, insha’Allah.

The hair which should be cut is that which surrounds the front private part, and above it up to the navel.
It would also be recommended to remove the hair from between one’s buttocks as this is closer to cleanliness.

At What Age Should Pubic Hair Be Removed?

Answered by Ustadh Tabraze Azam

Question: Salam,

At what age should the pubic hair be removed? What if a child’s pubic hair grow very early in his life?

Answer: Wa alaikum assalam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh,

I pray that you are in the best of health and faith, insha’Allah.

Legal rulings apply specifically to adults, namely somebody who has reached puberty.

However, children are to be trained to carry out their religious duties from before this age.

The Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace) said, “Command your children to pray at age seven, and discipline them regarding it at age ten.” [Abu Dawud]

Thus, each parent should have their child learn such rulings so they understand how to carry them out when needed.

Proper Method of Removing Pubic Hair

Answered by Ustadh Tabraze Azam

Question: What is the proper way to remove pubic hair from the body and where and when is it necessary?

Answer: Wa alaikum assalam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh,

I pray that you are well, insha’Allah.

One can remove one’s pubic hair by any means that is [a] not harmful to one’s private parts, nor [b] unduly painful. Thus, it would be permitted to pluck, trim, shave, or use any other safe method of removing hair. [Tahtawi, Hashiyat Tahtawi; Ibn `Abidin, Radd al-Muhtar]

Which Hair is being referred to?

The hair which should be cut is that which surrounds the front private part and above it.

It would also be recommended to remove the hair from between one’s buttocks as this is closer to cleanliness. [ibid.]

How often does one need to do it?

[1] It is recommended to do so weekly;

[2] Permitted to delay until 15 days;

[3] Prohibitively disliked (and sinful) to leave beyond 40 days. [Nahlawi, al-Durar wa al-Mubaha]

Why do we have to cut it?

The mother of believers `Aisha (Allah be pleased with her) related that the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) said that removing the pubic hair is from one’s natural disposition. [Muslim]

The scholars differed as to what the ‘natural disposition’ (fitra) was. Many of them indicated that this was the sunna. Others added that it was in fact the sunna of all of the Prophets (Allah bless them and give them all peace). [Nawawi, Sharh Muslim]

In any case, it is from our following of the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace) and as Allah Most High says, “If you obey him, you will be guided. [24:54]

And Allah alone gives success.
