The Prophetic Paradigm of Dealing With Problems – Shaykh Amin Kholwadia

In this Pre Khutba talk, Shaykh Amin Kholwadia reminds the congregation that the absence of problems in society are not a sign of communal success or well being. Human nature and society is inextricably bounded to problems and challenges. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) had to deal with problems and challenges on a daily basis. Furthermore, Islamic history is replete with events and episodes of turmoil and issues. Therefore, instead of rebelling against human nature, Muslims should adopt the approach and methodology of the Prophet (peace be upon him) in dealing with problems. He (peace be upon him) showed us through his blessed life that Islam teaches us how to navigate through human complexity. It is time that we realize this and embrace the Prophetic qualities of patience, forbearance, struggle, compassion and generosity in dealing with life and others. We should do our best in providing ease and assistance to those who are suffering from the challenges of life, and try to create a peaceful society by following the Prophetic model.

“What’s that?” I asked my Irish-American Muslim retired hippie convert mentor as he hummed “Allah,Allah, Allah.” in that unforgettably celticmaghribi melody. “It’s called a Qasida” all i thought was “Word! Ima learn that”. Singing Arabic poetry became a major part of my journey…..glad i heard him humming! (sometime in 1996)

Having lost the ability to sing, NOW I regret not recording. truth is: I was so busy trying to be humble, I never properly expressed gratitude for the great gift of speech and song. Ironically losing my speech has almost fully fixed the super bad cringing I’d experience whenever hearing my own voice. I’m listening to myself finally….. Wait for the drums it gets NorCal at 5:39

Shaykh Ahmed Hussein El AzharyIn this new podcast series, Shaykh Ahmed Hussein El Azhary will discuss why the art of reading is critical for students of knowledge to master. One of the greatest barriers in mastering a science is the inability to read with structure and comprehension. In this series, Shaykh Ahmed will provide students with a detailed approach to rectifying this problem.

In addition to offering practical tips and guidance in improving one’s reading and learning skills, Shaykh Ahmed will also elaborate on the development of the instrumental (foundational) sciences within the Islamic tradition and how they compare to medieval and modern theories of literary comprehension.

In episode 1, Dr. Yusuf Patel asks Shaykh Ahmed Hussein El Azhary why many students of knowledge are not able to read and master texts that they have studied. Furthermore, Shaykh Ahmed discusses the various phases of mastery that students should attain during their studies, and how the science of learning developed in the classical Islamic period and in modern times.

Biography of Shaykh Ahmed Hussein El Azhary:

Shaykh Ahmed El Azhary is a researcher in Islamic intellectual history and a teacher of Islamic traditional sciences. He’s currently a teacher of Hadith, Usūl, Logic and Kalam at Rawdatul-Na`īm under the supervision of Habib `Ali al-Jifrī; and at Madyafat Shaykh Ismaīl Sadiq al-`Adawī (RA), a prominent learning center by al-Azhar Mosque in Cairo.

Formerly, Shaykh Ahmed worked as a Lead Researcher at Tabah Foundation. He was appointed by Habib `Ali al-Jifrī to architect the philosophical framework of Suaal initiative – an initiative concerned with modelling an Islamic philosophical response to contemporary existential questions, supervised by Shaykh `Ali Jumu`ah, Habib `Umar and Shaykh Usama al-Azhary. Shaykh Ahmed continues to participate in Suaal initiative through essays, public lectures and workshops.

His previous experiences include: participating as a teaching assistant and then as a mentor at “Learning How to Learn,” the most popular course of all time on Coursera provided by University of California – San Diego; and working as a high school teacher of business, economics and psychology courses as well as supervising character development programs at Green Heights International School.

Shaykh Ahmed studied Anthropology at American University in Cairo and received his training in Leadership Communication from Tulane University and The University of Alabama at Birmingham. He is also a life-long learner. He holds a diversified portfolio of almost 50 certificates in a variety of subjects – extending from Teaching Character and Clinical Psychology of Children and Young People to Complexity Theory, Model Thinking and Conflict Analysis.

Shaykh Ahmed began his journey of studying traditional sciences about 20 years ago. In addition to studying with scholars from al-Azhar, he had the privilege of studying with visiting scholars from Algeria and India in a one-on-one format, and was thus given an exceptional opportunity to study and discuss advanced-level texts of different sorts and over a long period of time. Shaykh Ahmed has more than 70 Ijazas from scholars from all over the Muslim world.

Having read hundreds of books and conducted countless hours in research and study, Shaykh Ahmed has contributed to academic scholarship through four printed publications that help us understand the post-classical scholarly community in the Islamicate world. One of which is al-Matali` fī Adāb al-Mutali`, a compendium of seven edited treatises in the art of deep reading. He’s currently working on a second compendium that will include another three treatises in the same subject.

Beside a number of edited works about to be released in Islamic pedagogy, linguistics and Hanafi Usūl, Shaykh Ahmed has authored Rūh al-`Ilm – a treatise in the art of scientific investigation, based on a survey of roughly 200 traditional Islamic texts, and has been endorsed by Dr. Jamāl Fārūq, the Dean of Islamic Da`wah College at al-Azhar University and Dr. Ahmed Mamdūh, the Chair of Research Division at Dar al-Iftaa’ al-Masrīyah. Rūh al-`Ilm will be published by Tabah Foundation in the early of summer of 2019.

An Overview of the Maqasid Podcast: Knowledge, Devotion and Service by Shaykh Yahya Rhodus

Nilufer Gadgieva provides an overview of the Knowledge, Devotion and Service podcast, a podcast series available on SeekersGuidance by Shaykh Yahya Rhodus.

 

The Maqasid podcast is a series of brief, half-hour lessons discussing the altruistic aspects of knowledge, devotion and service, many of which are critical to the well-being of the Muslim soul. With poise and dedication, Shaykh Yahya covers various aspects of chivalry and companionship which could better strengthen and grow the relationships between modern Muslims, as it once did in the past.

The first set of lessons cover a book by Imam Abdulwahhab ash-Sha’rani known as Adab As-Suhbah, or the Etiquettes of Companionship. Through the life stories of the pious, the Shaykh thoroughly explains the significance of some of the most important aspects of good companionship in the context of Islam and how we can implement and integrate them into our own lives. Among the most important of these are selflessness, humility and understanding, and the removal of hasad, or envy, in our hearts towards our companions. He provides targeted steps for Muslims to take to practically increase love and affection in our daily relationships with our fellow human beings, and it makes for a compelling series.

The next set of lessons which are currently ongoing cover Imam Al-Husayn Al-Sulaimi’s Kitab-Al Futuwwa, or the Book of Spiritual Chivalry. This series is expansive and rich in classical Islamic etiquette of moral conduct between Muslims, and Shaykh Yahya touches upon important experiences in human life that relate to the points he discusses. While similar to the traits of Adab As-Suhbah, these characteristics are highly specific and indicate the reality of chivalry that comes from genuine love for the sake of Allah. Both moving and relatable, this podcast will surely make us reconsider our social priorities as family members, friends and neighbors of one another.

Personally, this podcast had a positive impact on me, particularly when I was in a place of uncertainty with my companions. Questioning their intentions towards me, I realized that companionship for the sake of Allah is purely just that, and I can’t take anything my friends do, say or act towards me in a personal light. Those who genuinely love me will reciprocate my efforts for them, and if they do not, I must be the better friend, partner and relative and give them 100% regardless of their attitude towards me. Loving for Allah’s sake removes the burden of conflict, sensitivity and suspicion from among friends, near and far, as it enhances a rational manner of approaching companionship.

The example of the Prophet, his Companions and the pious is sufficient for us, and to emulate their strong, unbreakable bonds between one another is truly a goal to be achieved in one’s life. Islam is a social religion, not one of individualism and isolation, and to be able to live in harmony with one’s family and friends (and to maintain that harmony) essentially contributes to our purpose in life – to submit to Allah and envelop Islam in our lifestyle.

He reminds us that as Muslims we need to prioritize our responsibilities and assist each other through challenges. When we face a collective problem, it is upon all of us to contribute to its solution. We should not fear to express our Islamic identity, but rather oppose bigotry, hatred and oppression with dignity and courage.  However, we need to ensure that we eradicate anger and hatred within ourselves before we expect the anger and hatred in others to be extinguished.

 

 


Shaykh Mohammed Amin is a Muslim scholar, mentor, and the founder of Darul Qasim, an institute of traditional Islamic higher learning headquartered in the Glendale Heights suburb of Chicago. Shaykh Amin is an active advocate of the classical Sunni tradition of Islamic scholarship and a passionate promoter of traditional Islamic sciences and methodologies of teaching and learning. He is regarded internationally as an expert theologian and an authority in the fields of Islamic philosophy and theosophy.

Nasheed Hub: SallaAllahu Alayk Ya Nur

The Nasheed Hub, an initiative of SeekersHub Global, aims to showcase the traditional Islamic art of nasheed, or Islamic devotional songs.

Sallalahu Alayk Ya Nur

This poem sends praise and blessings upon the Prophet, using analogy and comparing him to light. It was written by Shaykh Ahmad al-Alawi, the leader of the Alawi spiritual path. He was born in Mustaghanem, a city in Algeria, and later migrated to Morocco. After many years of study, he returned to his hometown, teaching until his death in 1934.

He begins the poem by saying “May Allah send blessings upon you, O Light! O Light of every station!” By using the analogy of light, something everyone can easily relate to, the author is able to educate the reader about the Prophet’s significance to the religion of Islam, to the life of Muslims, and to his appearance in the world.

He goes on to compare him to “lamp, oil, and light,” that is to say, complete light without a dependency, a light that came tremendously, as a perfect balance. Everything in existence became manifest through him, in the most beautiful manner. He was created before anything else was, and will continue to exist eternally.

He finishes by affirming that the universe is filled with light because of the Prophet’s light, and that he has attained all virtues and praiseworthy traits.

Nasheed Hub: Ya Talib al-Fana

The Nasheed Hub, an initiative of SeekersHub Global, aims to showcase the traditional Islamic art of nasheed, or Islamic devotional songs.

Ya Talib al-Fana (O You Who Seeks Annihilation Through Allah)

Ya Talib al-Fana, is the final poem in the series of the works of Shaykh Muhammad ibn al-Habib. It speaks to those who desire Allah fully.

The author begins by addressing the seekers directly, as “O you who seeks annihilation!” He then advises him to constantly be in remembrance of the name of Allah, devotedly and without distraction. If he makes Allah the object of his focus and devotion, all his other worries and concerns will be taken care of.

He then goes on to say that the seeker should make an effort to rid himself of distraction and other thoughts, since it will hinder him learning about Allah’s Divine Unity. The realisation of Allah’s Unity begins with remembrance of Allah and loving Him.

However, traversing the path cannot happen without a guide, and so the author congratulates the one who is able to find a living teacher. He mentions the qualities such a teacher must have: they must have devoted themselves completely to Allah, and made many nights prayers reciting His words.

Finally, the author says that all of our help comes from the Prophet, and sending blessings upon him, his family, and all those who call to him.

Nasheed Hub: Salamun ‘Ala Ahl al-Hima

The Nasheed Hub, an initiative of SeekersGuidance Global, aims to showcase the traditional Islamic art of nasheed, or Islamic devotional songs.

Salamun ‘Ala Ahl al-Hima (Peace be Upon the People of the Sacred Precinct)

This poem which appears as the final song in the Diwan of Shaykh Muhammad Ibn al-Habib, the famous guide of the Darqawi spiritual path. Some of the poems included in the collection, Nahnu Fi Rawda and Qasida Salamiyya, focus on his love for the Prophet Muhammad, Allah bless him and give him peace.

However, this one, titled “Peace be Upon the People of the Sacred Precinct,” reflects his love for the awliya, or Allah’s elect. It was written by Shaykh Abdul Salaam Jassus, and his nephew would regularly quote his poetry, especially in his final illness before death:

The author refers to the awliya as “those of the Sacred Precinct,” thus giving the analogy of being close to the Divine Presence, just like one would be close to holy places such as the Kaa’ba in Mecca or the Prophet’s Mosque in Medina. He congratulates them for the magnitude of their state, in which Allah has revealed to them about His beauty.

Out of his humility, he asks them to allow him to be among them despite his unworthiness, since they are worthy of bringing even the unworthy with them. He prays to Allah to elevate them even further, and that the blessing of Allah’s presence stay with them for ever.
