How Do Believers Stay Optimistic Despite Worsening Eras?
Answered by Shaykh Irshaad Sedick
Question
How can one remain patient and optimistic despite hadiths mentioning that each era will be worse than the last, especially when facing ongoing personal hardship?
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate.
While some hadiths indicate that humanity’s moral condition will decline over time, the Quran and Sunna offer a clear framework for individual and collective success, even in the most difficult of eras. Surat al-‘Asr reminds us that salvation is not tied to the age in which we live but to what we do with the time we are given.
Allah Most High says:
“By time, indeed, mankind is in loss, except those who believe and do righteous deeds, and encourage one another to truth, and encourage one another to patience.” [Quran 103:1–3]
Context and Detail
The hadiths that mention each generation being worse than the last speak of general societal decline, not of individual fate. Even in trying times, Allah opens the door for personal and ummatic success. Surah ‘Asr gives us the roadmap: faith, righteous action, mutual counsel in truth, and perseverance. These qualities define success in any era.
Moreover, the Prophet Muhammad (Allah bless him and give him peace) taught us to remain hopeful and proactive. He said:
“If the Hour (Day of Judgment) comes while one of you is planting a tree, let him finish planting it.” [Ahmad]
This hadith teaches us that despair has no place in the life of a believer. Even when the world seems to be at its end, we are called to continue doing good.
Conclusion
Do not let the world’s condition steal your hope. Allah has promised success to those who believe, act righteously, and remain steadfast. Focus on what you can control: your intentions, your actions, and your trust in Allah. With sincere effort, every era offers the opportunity for closeness to Allah and eternal success.
