Discouraging Listening to a Particular Quran Reciter

Answered by Shaykh Irshaad Sedick

Question

I had advised a brother not to listen to a certain reciter as “his tunes are more like music.” Did I backbite? Should I tell him what I said was wrong?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate. May Allah guide our hearts, tongues, and deeds to that which perpetually pleases Him.

Advising / Disadvising

Giving advice is generally welcomed. The Prophet (may Allah bless him and give him peace) said: “The Din (religion) is nasiha (goodwill, advice, or sincerity).” We said, “To whom?” He (may Allah bless him and give him peace) said, “To Allah, His Book, His Messenger, and to the leaders of the Muslims and their common folk.” [Muslim]

Misplaced Advice / Disadvice

Unless you are a scholar of recitation (qira’a), the advice described is misplaced, and Allah knows best. We advise you to repent and refrain from it in the future. The advisee may have deemed the recommendation sound; therefore, it might be better to rectify your statement with him.

And Allah knows best.

I pray this is of benefit and that Allah guides us all.
