47 – Humility and What It Alleviates

In this episode Shaykh Yahya Rhodus highlights the virtue and character of humility from the teaching of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Shaykh Yahya relates that the Messenger of God (peace be upon him) said: “practice humility until no one oppresses or belittles another”. He reflects that this teaching is one that is for the betterment of society. He gives some definitions of what humility is, and sums it up as: not seeing yourself as better than anything. Shaykh Yahya explains that “anything” includes animals and inanimate objects let alone humans, and the reason for not seeing oneself better than anything. This narration of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) also warns us of two of the most dangerous vices, which cause destruction in society. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) warns us of pride (fakhr) and oppression (baghei), which are results of arrogance (kibr). These vices are prohibited, and arrogance is one of the most dangerous traits of all as it keeps one from entering paradise.
The Content of Character is a remarkable collection of sayings of the Prophet Muhammad. Chosen by the scholar, Shaykh Al-Amin Ali Mazrui and translated by Shaykh Hamza Yusuf, this book was published to great critical acclaim.
Shaykh Al-Amin intended to show that progress among Muslims required not the abandonment of Islam but the recovery of the original spirit of Islamic enlightenment.
