Is It Permissible to Receive Welfare Payments as a Student If My Father May Have Underreported His Income?

Answered by Mawlana Ilyas Patel

Question

Is it permissible to receive welfare payments as a student if I have provided accurate information, but my father may have underreported his income, and I have no control over it?

Answer

I pray you are in good faith and health. Thank you for your question.

If you were honest and unaware of your father’s misreporting, then receiving welfare is permissible. You’re not sinful for others’ misdeeds, and if a problem is found later, taking corrective action is the most Allah-conscious (taqwa) path.

One must always act within the law’s bounds and not take anything by deception. The Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) said: “Whoever deceives us is not of us.” [Muslim]
