Is Screenwriting For Films And Documentaries Halal For Muslims?
Answered by Mawlana Ilyas Patel
Question
Is it permissible to work as a screenwriter for films or documentaries, and what guidelines should be observed?
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate.
I hope you are in good health and faith. Thank you for your question.
Working as a screenwriter for films or documentaries is generally permissible in Islam, provided the content adheres to halal boundaries. Islamic guidance supports writing narratives that do not promote immoral behavior, explicit content, disrespect toward religion, or normalize sinful lifestyles.
Screenwriting can be a valid way to earn halal income and can be beneficial when it educates and conveys meaningful themes. Permissible content includes documentaries, educational programs, children’s media, moral dramas, and respectful historical or biographical stories.
Impermissible Element
However, it becomes impermissible if the writer produces or helps create clearly haram material, such as scripts with sexual scenes, immodesty, positive depictions of substance abuse, mockery of faith, or glorification of immorality.
Screenwriters should avoid projects that are filmed unethically, ensure honesty in documentaries, uphold professional ethics, and prioritize their spiritual well-being. By choosing morally sound content and maintaining sincere intentions, screenwriting can align with Islamic guidelines.
Value of Time and Life Purpose
Ibn ‘Abbas reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said,
“There are two blessings which many people waste: health and free time.” [Bukhari]
Imam Ghazali mentions that every single breath of yours is a priceless jewel because it is irreplaceable; once it is gone, there is no return. So do not be like fools who rejoice daily as their wealth increases while their lives decrease. [Ghazali, Bidayat al-Hidaya]
