Can a Woman in Menstruation Wear Ihram Before Becoming Pure? And Can She Enter the Grand Mosque in Madina?

Hanafi Fiqh

Answered by Mawlana Ilyas Patel

Question

Can a woman in menstruation wear ihram before becoming pure? May she enter the Haram or walk in the Grand Mosque without performing rituals, such as to see the Ka‘ba or walk between Safa and Marwa? If menstruation begins in Madina, may she enter the Prophet’s Mosque to give salams, or stand in the courtyard and pray from there?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate

I pray you are in good faith and health. Thank you for your question.

A woman on her menses is prohibited from entering any mosque, including the Haram of Makkah and the Grand Mosque of Madina. However, she can enter into the state of Ihram. Read the details below regarding this. She can also stand in the courtyard of the Grand Mosque of Madina to pay respect and send Salawat on the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace).

Impermissible (Haram) Acts

According to the Hanafi School, while a woman is in a state of menstruation (hayd), it is impermissible (haram) to:

  • Pray the prayer (fard, witr, sunna, and nafl)
  • Prostrate (tilawa, shukr, tawba)
  • Fast (fard, sunna, and nafl)
  • Touch the Quran or a Quranic verse without a non-attached barrier
  • Recite the Quran
  • Enter any mosque
  • Make tawaf (ziyara, ‘umra, sadr, qudum, sunna, and nafl)
  • Engage in sexual intercourse

[Ibn ‘Abidin, Radd al-Muhtar]

If a menstruating woman follows this command with the intention of submitting to Allah’s order, she is actually worshiping Allah during the entire time she refrains from engaging in these actions.
