In this episode Shaykh Yahya Rhodus cautions from having the quality of cupidity (tama’), which is extreme greed for material wealth. He highlights the narration of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), “avoid cupidity for it is instant poverty”. Shaykh Yahya explains what cupidity (tama’) is and its centrality in the discussion of purifying the heart of blameworthy qualities and the vices. He describes the enslaving nature of cupidity, and how it keeps a person constantly feeling hollow and in a state of need and poverty. Conversely, Shaykh Yahya encourages us to be in state of satisfaction and contentment, and explains this praiseworthy trait.

The Content of Character is a remarkable collection of sayings of the Prophet Muhammad. Chosen by the scholar, Shaykh Al-Amin Ali Mazrui and translated by Shaykh Hamza Yusuf, this book was published to great critical acclaim.

Shaykh Al-Amin intended to show that progress among Muslims required not the abandonment of Islam but the recovery of the original spirit of Islamic enlightenment.

In this podcast series for SeekersHub, Shaykh Yahya Rhodus does a commentary on these concise and yet comprehensive sayings, with a special focus on character-building, morals, good manners and ethics.
