46 – Staying Clean as Best We Can

In this episode Shaykh Yahya Rhodus relates from Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) that he said: “stay clean as best you can, for Allah established Islam upon cleanliness”. Shaykh Yahya expalins that the Prophet’s (peace and blessings be upon him) call to stay clean as best as we can is both outwardly and inwardly. He innumerates some of the different aspects and areas of outward cleanliness that were related in the tradition of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He mentions dental hygiene, body cleanliness, cleanliness of one’s clothes, possessions and surroundings among other things. Shaykh Yahya further highlights that all the religious legislations have come to clean the human being inwardly. He details that this includes prayer, fasting, giving charity, the pilgrimage, among all the other things that Allah and His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) called us to.

The Content of Character is a remarkable collection of sayings of the Prophet Muhammad. Chosen by the scholar, Shaykh Al-Amin Ali Mazrui and translated by Shaykh Hamza Yusuf, this book was published to great critical acclaim.

Shaykh Al-Amin intended to show that progress among Muslims required not the abandonment of Islam but the recovery of the original spirit of Islamic enlightenment.
