Is Sparring with Headgear Permissible as Part of Self-Defense?

Hanafi Fiqh

Question

I saw that hitting the face is not allowed when boxing. If a person is wearing a head guard that covers the face, can they spar while getting hit on the head guard? Or is this still not allowed? The purpose is self-defense and sparring practice.

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate.

I hope you are in good health and faith.

It will be impermissible to spar while wearing headgear, as the possibility of head injuries still exists, albeit less so. One is still striking the face and head.

The impermissibility of striking the face is quite clear. One can spar on pads with a partner or a coach, completely avoiding the face, and this would be permissible. In this way, there is no harm to either side, and it would be permitted as a means of training someone for strength, speed, and self-defense.

Abu Hurayra (Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) said, “If somebody fights (or beats somebody), then he should avoid the face.” [Bukhari]

Striking Head Can Cause Loss of Senses

Imam Zayla‘i, explaining the Kanz al-Daqa’iq, says:

“‘Except his head, face, and private parts.’ This is because the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) said to the one carrying out the penal punishment: ‘Avoid the face and the private parts.’

Striking the private parts can cause serious bodily harm, while striking the head may result in the loss of senses such as hearing, sight, smell, and understanding.

The same applies to the face, which is the gathering place of a person’s beauty and features. There is no assurance that these will not be lost through striking it.” [Zayla‘i; Tabyin al-Haqai’q Sharh Kanz al-Daqa’iq]

One must always consider whether an action has a valid Sharia basis or a rational benefit that outweighs or justifies the harm.

Another alternative is to use punch bags with a face, often called Body Opponent Bags or mannequin bags, designed for realistic combat training, self-defense, and pinpoint striking accuracy.

And Allah knows best.
