Is It Permissible to Conceal One’s Conversion to Islam From Family?
Hanafi Fiqh
Answered by Mawlana Ilyas Patel
Question
Is it permissible for a convert to delay revealing their Islam to their family due to fear of harm, family pressure, and marriage expectations?
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate.
Welcome to the fold of Islam.
Yes, it is permissible for you to delay and conceal your Islam for the reasons mentioned above. Once you are confident enough to reveal it, you can do so.
Once your family sees the changes in your behavior toward them, appreciates them, and you gain confidence in Islam and its truth, you may be able to reveal it. Once again, seek guidance from scholars and like-minded practicing Muslim friends.
Allah Most High says, ‘Allah does not burden a soul beyond what it can bear.’ [Quran, 2:286]
Allah Is with the Patient
The Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) said, “Amazing is the affair of the believer, for there is good for him in every matter—and this is not the case with anyone except the believer. If he experiences joy, he is grateful, and that is good for him.
If he experiences hardship, he is patient, and that is good for him.” [Muslim]
The Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) said, “The believer who mixes with people and bears their annoyance with patience will have a greater reward than the believer who does not mix with people and does not put up with their annoyance.” [Ibn Maja]
Averting Harm is Preferable to Seeking Benefit
If one sees harm at a given moment, then, over time, benefit will follow, so it is important to remove potential harm.
Stay Positive
Stay positive and focus on the positives in your life. Asking for faith-preserving advice shows your good faith, al hamdulillah. Such challenges happen to everyone. Do what is required now, be patient with everything, family, etc.
Gradually strengthen yourself mentally and Islamically, and do your best.
And Allah knows best.
