035 – Being Pleased with Oneself and Choosing One’s Teachers

The Hikam

In this episode, Shaykh Zahir Bacchus covers the 35th aphorism of the Hikam: “The source of every disobedience, heedlessness and desire  is being pleased with the self and the source of every obedience, awareness and self respect is your not being pleased with the self. To keep the company of an ignoramus who is not pleased with himself is better for you than to keep the company of a scholar who is pleased with himself, for what ignorance does an ignoramus have who is not pleased with himself and what knowledge does a scholar have who is not pleased with himself .”This podcast covers “The Hikam”,  considered a classical masterpiece in spiritual literature – written by the great spiritual master of 13th/14th century Ibn Ata’illah.

The Hikam is a book of spiritual aphorisms containing timeless and pure spiritual wisdom.

Shaykh Zahir is the Co-Founder and Executive Director at Lote Tree Foundation. He also serves was the Imam at the Jamiat-ul-Ansar Masjid in Brampton, Ontario, Canada.
