Question

Are there any effects of sin that remain after repentance?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate

I pray you are in good faith and health. Thank you for your question.

If one fulfills the conditions of repentance, along with continuously repenting and seeking forgiveness, then the after-effects of sins will be erased and will remain no more. In fact, if one sins and sincerely repents and asks for forgiveness, then Allah Most High will change the sin into virtue.

Wasiti (Allah have mercy on him) said the spiritual light of obedient works removes the darknesses of sins. Yahya ibn Mu’adh (Allah have mercy on him) said, indeed Allah Most High is so kind that when a servant sins, he conceals it, and not only that, he forgives it if he repents, and not only that, he changes the sin into a virtue. Ibn Kathir (Allah have mercy on him said, the reason is when you change your life from sin into virtue, every time you pass the place of sin, you will be reminded of the past sin, and from the depth of your heart, cry, have deep remorse and ask for forgiveness.

Allah Most High said, “Establish prayer ˹O Prophet˺ at both ends of the day and in the early part of the night. Surely good deeds wipe out evil deeds. That is a reminder for the mindful.” [Quran, 11:114]

[Alusi, Ruh al-Ma’ni, Ibn Kathir, Tafsir al-Quran al-Adhim]

We ask Allah Most High to give us every success to facilitate immediate regret, forgiveness, and continuous repentance in our lives and make us from those who oft repent, seek forgiveness from Allah Most High and fellow human beings, always, amin.
