Supplication for Compassion Upon Parents: Quranic Supplications 9

During Ramadan 2023, Sheikh Faraz Rabbani gave a series of daily video talks on supplications in the Quran. This series of articles are drawn from those talks and the related eBook. This article is about asking for compassion upon parents. The video series can be viewed here.

رَّبِّ ٱرْحَمْهُمَا كَمَا رَبَّيَانِى صَغِيرًۭا

“My Lord, show them mercy, the way they raised me when I was a child.” [Quran, 17:24]

This is what Allah has taught the people of faith to say out of gratitude and love for our parents. One of the driving forces towards our gratitude, appreciation, respect and love for our parents is to reflect on the reality that we owe our lives to them. That they raised us when we could not fend for ourselves.

The governing attitude towards our parents should be love and gratitude. Even if they fall short. Even if they may have made some mistakes. And Even if they may have wronged you. We don’t accept the wrong, yet we still appreciate the gift that we owe them.

Gratitude towards Parents

We pray to Allah Most High: “O Lord,  have mercy upon them. Grant them the good of this life and the next, as they raised me when I was small.” These verses from Surat al-Isra’ tell us about the duty of respect, care, gentleness, politeness and tenderness. We owe our parents excellence in conduct with them.

One of the signs that you care about your parents – that you have gratitude to them and ultimately gratitude to Allah for the gift of life, and all that you have – is to pray regularly for your parents. Recite this supplication. Strive also to pray with your heart, not just with your tongue for your parents after every daily prayer.

May Allah make us of those who have gratitude towards Him and who have gratitude to our parents and who have gratitude for every good that we have in life.

Praise be to Allah, Lord of all the worlds.
