Is It Sinful to Avoid the Front Rows in Congregational Prayer?

Answered by Ustadh Sufyan Qufi

Question

Is the hadith about people avoiding the front row in prayer authentic, and does it mean those who pray in later rows are sinful?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate.

I pray this finds you in the best of states.

The hadith, reported by Abu Sa‘id al-Khudri (Allah be pleased with him), tells us that the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace) once noticed that some of his Companions were hanging back instead of moving forward. He said to them:

“Come forward and follow my lead, and let those after you follow your lead. A people will continue to hold back until Allah holds them back.” [Muslim]

This Hadith is an authentic hadith (al-hadith al-sahih).

According to the Hanafi school, it is prohibitively disliked and thus sinful to pray in a row behind while leaving empty space in the row in front of you. [Shurunbulali, Maraqi al-Falah; al Khayr al-Baqi]

The commentators explain that this “holding back” can be understood in two main ways. The first is quite literal: it refers to delaying from stepping into the front rows of the prayer. The Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace) was urging the Companions to come close, to fill the front rows, and not to leave them empty. The second interpretation is broader: it refers to hanging back from seeking knowledge and from striving in good deeds more generally. In either case, the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace) was warning against a mentality of always leaving the higher virtue to others.

When he said, “Allah will hold them back,” the meaning is that if people persist in holding back, whether from the front rows, from knowledge, or from good works, then Allah will withhold them from His mercy, from elevated ranks, from virtue, or even delay them from entering Paradise compared to others. Imam Nawawi explained that it means they will be held back from Allah’s mercy, His great bounty, the higher ranks, and from attaining knowledge and other forms of excellence.

So the hadith does not mean that those who pray in later rows are sinful. Their prayer is valid and rewarded. Instead, it is a strong warning that those who habitually avoid the front rows or consistently hold themselves back from seeking virtue show a lack of zeal for what is best, and that lack may result in Allah withholding from them the highest rewards. And Allah knows best.
