What Is the Ruling of Finding a White Discharge after Urinating?
Answered by Ustadh Sufyan Qufi
Question
I woke up and found no wetness in my undergarments, no wet dream. That I can recall. But after waking up and urinating, I get a plug of clouded white discharge; a lot of it that comes out goes beyond the outer of the privates. This happens daily, so I don’t take ghusl as I feel it’s not a sexual discharge am I doing right? Sticky plug of discharge
Answer
In the name of Allah, Most Compassionate, Most Merciful,
The discharge you have described is called “wadi” in Islamic law. You don’t have to perform a ritual bath (ghusl) when you see it. You simply need to renew your wudu. [Quduri, Mukhtassar]
Wadi is described as a thick white liquid that exits the private part right after urinating. [Ibn ‘Abidin, Radd al-Muhtar]
Wadi only necessitates Wudu and not Ghusl because it comes right after urinating and is thus assimilated to urine. It follows that Wadi is governed by the same rulings related to urine. Imam al-Marghinani (may Allah have mercy on him) calls it thick urine. [Marghinani, Hidaya]
This understanding of the rulings pertaining is supported by a narration from Sayyidatuna’ Aisha (May Allah be pleased with her) transmitted by Ibn al-Mundhir (may Allah have mercy on him). [Ibn al-Humam, Fath al-Qadir]
And Allah knows best.
Wassalam
