What We Keep From These Days
A letter from Shaykh Faraz Rabbani
As a new Hijri year begins, it is worth asking ourselves: What will we carry with us from these blessed days? The days of Muharram pass quickly, but the habits we begin in them can remain with us for the rest of the year.
The Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) said: “The most beloved deeds to Allah are those done consistently, even if they are small.” [Sahih al-Bukhari] This hadith teaches us that lasting transformation comes through small acts of worship practiced consistently.
Three Practices to Carry Through the Year
Begin with one practice. To help it become a part of your daily life, try linking it to something you already do—such as reciting adhkar after morning prayer, fasting on a day you do not have pressing commitments, or giving charity at the start of each month. Once your first habit feels a part of your life, add another.
- Fast one day each week—Monday or Thursday.
- Recite your morning and evening adhkar.
- Give a small amount in charity each month, no matter how little.
Small deeds, sustained over time, shape the heart and carry their mark through the year.
