I Always Feel That I Am in a State of Major Ritual Impurity.

Hanafi Fiqh

Answered by Shaykh Abdul-Rahim Reasat

Question: Assalamu alaykum

I wet my undergarments a lot due to waswas about urine. If I have an erotic dream and feel something coming out I check my underwear and they’re wet. Can I assume this is due to me wetting them when awake?

I should add that I have a very specific issue that makes me feel Junub constantly. Sometimes I will close my eyes and feel as though I have gone to sleep for a couple of seconds and in this time I may see something erotic and feel something coming out of my private area.

Please advise as I feel like I am completing acts of worship without being properly cleaned from major impurity.

Answer: Wa ‘alaykum as-salam wa rahmatullah wa barakatuh

I pray you are well.

Urine Leakage

Firstly, let’s establish if you have urine leakage or not. If you do not, then please refrain from soaking your underwear. This is making your issue worse.

If you do have urine leakage then go and see a doctor about the problem. Usually, pelvic floor exercises – also known as Keegal Exercises – help both men and women significantly with this issue. Someone told me that he went from having a lot of leakage to being able to maintain his wudu for many hours after making a practice of doing these exercises.

Feeling Like You Are A Junub

Now that there is no need to soak your clothes, the other issues are easy to deal with. If you see mani on your clothes after sleeping – even if it a light nap – then you are are in a state of janaba. Mani is discharged in amounts larger than other fluids; therefore seeing a few white specks should not make you think you need to have a bath.

With this taken care of, and with there being no wetness life should be easier for you. Please take a course next term, learn the basic fiqh of tahara, and relax. The Messenger of Allah, Allah bless him and give him peace, said: “Indeed [the practice of] the religion is ease [itself]” (Bukhari). Practice it in the way it was meant to be practiced.

You will undoubtedly benefit from dhikr; the more you do, the better. You should also look into some therapy for your OCD tendencies.

May Allah grant you the best of both worlds.

Over the following eighteen months he studied a traditional curriculum, studying with scholars such as Shaykh Adnan Darwish, Shaykh Abdurrahman Arjan, Shaykh Hussain Darwish and Shaykh Muhammad Darwish.

In late 2008 he moved to Amman, Jordan, where he continued his studies for the next six years, in Fiqh, Usul al-Fiqh, Theology, Hadith Methodology and Commentary, Shama’il, and Logic with teachers such as Dr Ashraf Muneeb, Dr Salah Abu’l-Hajj, Dr Hamza al-Bakri, Shaykh Ahmad Hasanat, Dr Mansur Abu Zina amongst others.
