Must a Man Learn the Rulings of Menstruation?

As a man, am I obliged to learn the rulings of menstruation (hayd) taught in Level One of Ascent to Felicity, and do I need all of it for the Level One certificate?
Answer
No, you are not obliged to learn the whole chapter as Level One teaches it. In the Hanafi school, what binds you personally is what your own state requires, and if you are married or heading there, part of this chapter is genuinely yours. In practice, that is a short list: when intimacy becomes unlawful and when it becomes lawful again, how to tell menstruation from irregular bleeding (istihada) when your wife is unsure, and what to do if you get it wrong. The rest is hers to learn, and you are not answerable for it.
The Kuwaiti Encyclopedia of Fiqh (al-Mawsua al-Fiqhiyya al-Kuwaytiyya) states it in a line: “Learning is sometimes a personal obligation (fard ayn), and that is the learning of what one cannot do without.” [al-Mawsua al-Fiqhiyya al-Kuwaytiyya 13:6] This is the knowledge of one’s own state (ilm al-hal), and it moves as your life moves.
The Encyclopedia puts the learning of this chapter on the woman, and on her husband the duty to teach her if he knows, or to let her ask the scholars. You may not stand between your wife and the answer. Ibn Nujaym (Allah have mercy on him) adds that knowing its questions “is among the most important matters, for the countless rulings that rest upon it, such as purity, prayer, the recitation of the Quran, fasting, spiritual retreat, hajj, and the coming of legal majority.” [al-Mawsua al-Fiqhiyya al-Kuwaytiyya 18:293]
The Quran puts your share in front of men:
(وَيَسْأَلُونَكَ عَنِ الْمَحِيضِ قُلْ هُوَ أَذًى فَاعْتَزِلُوا النِّسَاءَ فِي الْمَحِيضِ)
“And they ask you about menstruation; Say: It is foul, so leave off from women while in their menses.” [Quran 2:222; Keller, The Quran Beheld] Men asked, and the command came down addressed to men. When intimacy becomes lawful again, it turns on how her bleeding ended, and the cost of guessing falls on you.
Ibn Abidin (Allah have mercy on him) warns: “Know that the chapter of menstruation is among the most intricate of chapters.” [Ibn Abidin, Radd al-Muhtar 1:282] A chapter of that kind is not one you pick up on the night you first need it, from a search engine or from a spouse who may be unsure herself.
For the certificate, you complete the whole of Level One, including this chapter. That is a course requirement, not a ruling on you: a course may teach more than binds any student in the room, and what binds you does not shrink a syllabus. Write to the Academy team for the exact requirements; I would sooner send you than guess.
