Is Deferred Mahr Deducted From One’s Assets When Calculating Zakat?

Question: Assalamu ‘alaykum. Is deferred mahr deducted from one’s assets when calculating Zakat?

Answer:

Wa ‘alaykum assalam wa rahmatullah wa barakatuh.

I pray you are well.

Yes, both deferred and immediately payable mahr payments can be deducted from one’s assets when calculating zakat. [Mawsili, al-Ikhtiyar] As with everything, a believer should turn to Allah with all his needs, including the repayment of debts. Ask Allah to facilitate its payment for you.

May Allah grant you the best of both worlds.
