Fasting The White Days of Sha‘ban

Can I Delay the Necessary Fast and Perform the White Day Fasts?

Answered by Mawlana Ilyas Patel

Question

I broke a nafl fast sometime back and need to make it up, but tomorrow is the 13th of the lunar month. So, can I delay the wajib fast to do the three lunar month fasts, or is it possible to combine both the wajib and lunar month fasts?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate

I pray you are in good faith and health. Thank you for your question.

You can delay the necessary (wajib) fast for another day and perform the fast of the white days.

Qatada ibn Milhan (Allah be pleased with him) said, “The Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace) used to command us to fast the white days: the thirteenth, fourteenth, and fifteenth.” [Abu Dawud]

It is a recommended sunna to fast on the white days (13th, 14th, and 15th of each month) and also a recommended sunna to fast on Mondays and Thursdays.
