Question: How did Our Lady Fatima (Allah bless her and give her peace) pass away?
Wa alaykum assalam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh,
Thank you for your important question.
Our Lady Fatima (Allah bless her and give her peace) passed away in 11 AH, just six months after her father, the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace).
Aisha (Allah bless her and give her peace) tells us that the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) called her before his death and told her something in secret at which she cried. Then he told her something else in secret at which she cried again. Then, he told her something else in secret at which she smiled. Aisha said, “I asked Fatima, ‘What did he tell you that made you cry, and what did he tell you that made you smile?'”
She replied that she cried when he told her that he was going to die and that she smiled when he told her that she would be the first one to be with him again. [Muslim]
In the Musnad of Imam Ahmad, there is a description of her death, but it is a weak hadith. [Nasb al-Rayah, Zayla’i; al-Mawdu’at, Ibn al-Jawzi; Musnad Ahmad, ed. Shaykh Shuayb al-Arnaut]. The hadith is narrated by her nurse, and reads:
Sayyidna Ali left on some errand and [Our Lady Fatima] said, ‘Darling, please pour me some water to bathe with.’ I poured her the water and she bathed in the most perfect way I have ever seen her bathe. The she said, ‘Darling, please give me my new clothes.’ So I did, and she put them on. Then she said, ‘Darling, please put my bed in the middle of the house.’ So I did and then she lay down facing the qibla with her hand under her cheek. Then she said, ‘Darling, I am going to die right now. I am going to die right now. I have already bathed myself so let no one undress me.’ Then she died in that spot.
