Question: Regarding the Principle: “Means take the rulings of ends.” Does the means itself have to be permissible?

Answer: [From the forum of Fiqh of Life: The Essentials of Halal & Haram, a SeekersGuidance online course]

In the Name of Allah, the Benevolent, the Merciful

Walaikum assalam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh,

I pray this finds you in the best of health and spirits.

The legal principle is:

[Means take the rulings of ends.] للوسائل حكم الغايات

The conditions for this principle are that:

* The means be in itself permissible, and
* Its taking not result in a meaning orconsequence contrary to the Shariah.

(In short, the means has to be permissible and sound. بشرط سلامة الوسيلة)

And Allah alone gives success.

wassalam,
