(taqwa).” [Qur'an, 2.21]

He explains how the underlying motive in our worship is thankfulness, in recognition of the gift of life itself–and the other innumerable gifts of Allah Most High upon us. This thankfulness is expressed in our worship, and has an end: to become beloved to Allah, by being realized in the meanings of true submission. This true submission is mindfulness of Allah (taqwa).

It is about understanding that creation is the means and not an end, that in sacrificing what we dearly love for ourselves for the good of others is the Way to seek Closeness to our Lord. Attachment to and yearning for the material is a sign of Shirk. But, in the spending of creation that we have been blessed with, sacrificing it as the means to seeking and yearning for Allah is a sign of Tawhîd, which is the Station of Ibrahim we have been asked to learn from and emulate.
