Question
What are the benefits of regularly remembering Allah in daily life?
Answer
The remembrance of Allah is the key to all good. Allah Most High tells us in the Quran:
O you who believe! Remember Allah with much remembrance. And glorify Him morning and evening. [Quran, 33:41-42]
Imam Ibn Ata’illah al-Iskandari states that the remembrance of Allah is the foundation of the path of drawing closer to Him.
It is the essence of presence with and closeness to Allah, and it is the key to illuminating the heart with the light of faith.
The one who frequently remembers Allah will find their heart purified, their soul illumined, and their affairs guided by divine grace.
The great North African scholar Imam Ibn ‘Ajiba, commented on another verse of the Quran where Allah commands us:
And remember your Lord when you forget. [Quran, 18:24]
and explains that true remembrance occurs when one forgets everything besides Allah in the state of remembering Him. [Ibn Ajiba, al-Bahr al-Madid]
This means that one is not just remembering with the tongue but is fully present with Allah by absenting oneself from worldly distractions.
He further states that true remembrance is when the one remembering Allah becomes so absorbed in the divine presence that they forget even their own self, form, and senses—such that Allah becomes the primary focus of their concern.
This deep connection is also pointed to in the hadith qudsi where the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) relates that Allah Most High says:
I am as My servant thinks of Me, and I am with him when he remember Me. If he remembers Me in himself, I remember them in Myself. If he mentions Me in a gathering, I mention him in a greater gathering.
And when his lips move in My remembrance, I am with him. [Bukhari; Muslim]
When one reaches the state of consciousness where even the movement of the lips in dhikr is seen as being created and sustained by Allah, they have truly attained deep remembrance.
This reality is observable by those who have found a true spiritual path, taken the company of a righteous guide, and walked the path of drawing closer to Allah.
The early Muslim sage, Hasan al-Basri, is reported to have said:
Seek the sweetness of worship in three things: in prayer, in remembrance, and in recitation of the Quran.
If you find it, then proceed. But if not, know that you have much work to do.
These three acts are among the easiest means to attain the sweetness of faith.
If one does not experience this sweetness in their prayer, remembrance, or Quranic recitation, they should strive to increase their sincerity and presence of heart in worship.
Lastly, if one is troubled by worries and concerns, the solution is to remember Allah. As the Quran tells us:
Truly, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest. [Quran 13:28]
May Allah facilitate for us true remembrance and grant us hearts that find tranquility in Him.
