Is It Permissible for Me to Eat and Wear Clothing Provided to Me by My Parents If Their Wealth Is Impermissible?

Answered by Shaykh Yusuf Weltch

Question

As a 15-year-old, if my mother’s income is from a haram source like insurance, but my father’s earnings are halal from his clinic, should I refrain from eating the food they provide me?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate

Yes, it is permissible for you to eat food and wear clothing provided to you by your parents despite your mother working for an insurance company.

Just to be clear, the mere fact that your mother works for an insurance company does not mean her wealth is entirely impermissible. That would depend on the nature of her role at the insurance company. [Ibn ‘Abidin, Radd al-Muhtar]

Since your father’s occupation is permissible, you can consider all the food and clothing as part of his household income. In this case, all the aforementioned things are permissible regardless of the nature of your mother’s employment with the insurance company. [Ibid.]

Hope this helps
