Is It Permissible To Make a Ramadan Calendar for My Child?

Answered by Mawlana Ilyas Patel

Question

I would like to make a Ramadan calendar for my child and buy 30 things for each Ramadan day. But isn’t it an imitation of the kuffar because of their advent calendar, or could it also be a bid’a?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate

I pray you are in good faith and health. Thank you for your question.

It would be permissible to make a Ramadan calendar for your child as long as one does not regard it as compulsory and uses similar activities to encourage children to inculcate the importance and virtues of Ramadan in them. In return, it will create a spiritual atmosphere of competition and joy amongst family, friends, and fellow Muslim children.

The Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) used to prepare and condition the companions’ minds by telling them the importance and virtues of Ramadan before the month’s commencement. These were the minds of adults. Similarly, one can use methods and means to condition and prepare the minds of our children through various permissible means, like giving them Ramadan calendars with a theme, like Ramadan Fasting Calendars, Ramadan Quran Calendars, Ramadan Kindness Calendars, etc.

The Prophet Connects Fasting of Ramadan and Sha’ban

‘Aisha (Allah be pleased with her) reported: The most beloved month to the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace) for fasting was Sha’ban, then he would connect it with Ramadan. [Abu Dawud]

Abu Huraira (Allah be pleased with her) reported: The Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace) said when the month of Ramadan arrived: Ramadan has come, a blessed month in which Allah Most High has obligated you to fast. In it, the gates of the heavens are opened, and in it, the gates of Hellfire are closed, and in it, the devils are chained, and in it is a night that is better than a thousand months. Thus, whoever is deprived of its good is truly deprived. [Ahmad]
