How Did the Scholars of Tarim Go From Iraq to Tarim (Yemen)?

Answered by Shaykh Yusuf Weltch

Question

How and why did the scholars of Tarim move from Iraq to Tarim (Yemen)?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate

The scholars of Tarim are many. The families of Ba Fadl, al-Khatib, and the families whose lineage goes back to the Prophet (may Allah bless him and give him peace) via al-Muhajir Ahmad bin ‘Isa are some of the most prominent families.

Muhajir Ahmad bin ‘Isa

The Prophetic family first arrived in Hadramawt by al-Muhajir Ahmad bin ‘Isa who migrated to Tarim from Basra, Iraq

His full name is Ahmad bin ‘Isa bin Muhammad bin ‘Ali al-‘Uraydi bin Ja‘far al-Sadiq bin Muhammad al-Baqir bin ‘Ali Zain al-‘Abidin bin Husayn bin ‘Ali bin Abi Talib and Fatimah bint Muhammad the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and give him peace).

Al-Muhajir Ahmad bin ‘Isa was born in Basra, ‘Iraq, in the late third century after Hijra. At this time, the descendants of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and give him peace) were specifically targeted and persecuted. Due to the political and religious strife in Basra, al-Muhajir decided to migrate.

Imam al-Muhajir Ahmad bin ‘Isa was one of the great scholars of Islam and a righteous servant of Allah Most High. His lineage carries on today through his grandson ‘Alawi, who comes to a great scholar of the Ba ‘Alawi tribe.

Respect for the Prophetic Family

Abu Bakr al-Siddiq is narrated to have said, “Respect Muhammad (may Allah bless him and give him peace) regarding His household.” [Bukhari]

When speaking of the great scholars of Islam, one must speak respectfully of them. It is via these people that the true understanding of Islam was preserved. They are symbols of Islam.

Allah Most High says, “And whoever reveres the symbols of Allah that is a sign of the Taqwa of the hearts.” [Quran, 22:32]
