How to Dispose of Packets If the Quranic Word Halal Is Mentioned?

Answered by Shaykh Abdul-Rahim Reasat

Question

On some food we package, we see a Halal logo to indicate it is Halal. The English word “Halal” is pasted on the package as the Arabic word. I searched and found that the Arabic word is in the Quran. Should we then burn or bury the packages?

Answer

I pray you are well. You can dispose of such packaging. It does not have to be burnt or buried. If you like, you can tear that part off and tear the word to separate the letters. This is probably superior.

The word alone does not constitute a Quranic verse. For entire or partial verses, you can cure them in a clean, pure place where the ground will not be trampled.

It is also possible to shred paper with such text on it that the letters are separated. The remains can be disposed of as you wish. This is better than burning as the text usually remains intact after burning, and the ashes have to be broken up. [Ibn ‘Abidin, Radd al-Muhtar]

May Allah rewards for this; “for whoever venerates the signs of Allah – it is from the Godfearingness of their hearts.” [Quran, 22:32]

Keep this attitude and base it on sound knowledge. You’ll benefit a great deal from it.

May Allah grant you the best of both worlds.
