If I Have Caused Damaged People’s Property, Can I Give Charity to a Mosque as Expiation?

Answered by Shaykh Yusuf Weltch

Question Summary

If I have caused damaged people’s property, can I give charity to a Mosque as expiation? What should be my intention in such a case?

Question Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate

If you have damaged property at a store/shop, estimate the value of the item and donate the money to that specific store. If the property belonged to an individual, you can anonymously donate the money to them or in the form of a gift. [Ibn ‘Abidin, Radd al-Muhtar]

Your intention in both cases is to return to them the value of the property damaged.

Hope this helps
