Would it be Permissible to Daydream About Being in a Movie?

Answered by Mawlana Ilyas Patel

Question

I tend to daydream a lot, but it does not interfere with my prayers or relationship with Allah Most High, Alhamdulillah.

But I was wondering if what I daydream about is permissible. I’m interested in movies/filmmaking and have daydreamed about being in my favorite movies or imagining my version of the film as a director. Is this permissible since the movies have already been made, and I can’t be involved? Is fantasizing about anything that’s not realistic/possible ok?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate

I pray you are in good faith and health. Thank you for your question.

It is not permissible to dream about oneself being in a film or movie. Since these movies are just fiction-based, full of fantasy and unreal in reality. An alternative is to imagine oneself being part of the history of the Prophets, Companions, and the Righteous and just imagine how great it would have been to be part of it.

Our Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) said, “It is from the excellence of a believer’s Islam that he should shun that which is of no concern to him.” [Tirmidhi]
