Can I Rent My House to an Idol Worshiper?

Hanafi Fiqh

Answered by Ustadh Tabraze Azam

Question: I own a two-story house. Is it permissible in Islam to rent out one of the floors to a non-muslim who will place statues for the purposes of their worship? If permitted, is the rent considered halal?

May Allah bless you for taking time to answer this question.

Answer: Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullah,

I pray that this finds you in the best of health and spirits, insha’Allah.

Yes, it would be permissible to rent out the floor to a non-Muslim who will use it to worship idols.

This would be considered an indirect assistance in sin and slightly disliked (makruh tanzihan), yet not sinful. However, it would be best to avoid renting to such a person if reasonably possible, and this would be from praiseworthy piety.
