Is it Permissible to Refrain From Having a Wedding in Muharram?

Question Summary

Is it permissible to refrain from having a wedding in Muharram out of respect for Imam Husayn (Allah’s mercy be upon him) and the tragic event of Karbala?

Question Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate

It is your discretion to choose to have your wedding at any time.

With regards to the tragic event of Karbala, the scholars have viewed the event with a particular lens. They looked at the event out of (a) contentment for the decree of Allah and (b) witnessing Allah’s bestowal of the great blessing of martyrdom upon them.

Furthermore, they understood that the greatest way to honor Imam Husayn (Allah be pleased with him) and the Prophetic household is it uphold the way of their Grandfather: the Prophet Muhammad (may Allah bless him and give him peace).

It is from the sunna of the Prophet (may Allah bless him and give him peace) to hasten the marriage when a suitor is found.

Hastening the Marriage

The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and give him peace) said, “Three things, there is no delay therein: the burial when there is someone to carry the bier, a marriage when a suitor is found, and hosting a guest when they arrive…” [Bayhaqi]

Scholarly Statements Regarding Marriage in Muharram

Imam al-Qurtubi (Allah have mercy on him)

“Likewise, the ignorant of the day have deemed reprehensible marriage in the month of Muharram. Rather, one should seek fortune through marriage and consummation in this month, holding fast to that which Allah and His Messenger (may Allah bless him and give him peace) have honored of its sanctity; and as a rebuke of the ignorant.” [al-Qurtubi, al-Mufhim]

Summary

It is not a sign of disrespect to Imam Husayn (Allah have mercy on him) nor the Prophetic household to perform your wedding in the month of Muharram. However, the decision is fully under your discretion.

Hope this helps
