Is it Permissible to Use Bentonite Clay?

Answered by Mawlana Ilyas Patel

Question

is it permissible to use bentonite clay that is derived from volcanic ash? It’s used in face masks. After intense contact with water, most bentonites are formed by altering volcanic ash and rocks.

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate

I pray you are in good faith and health. Thank you for your question.

It is permissible to use bentonite clay as the ingredients are all-natural.

Wudu With Clay

The basis and principle is that as long as it does not form a perceptible barrier upon the skin one will be allowed to do wudu with it. However, it is better to do wudu first if one intends to pray.

This is because the command is to wash the face, and if the face is covered by something effectively akin to a mask, you haven’t fulfilled the command.
