What Is the Grading of the Hadith, There Will Be Tribulation in the Levant, the First Part of Which Is Child’s Play?

Answered by Mawlana Ilyas Patel

Question

I would like to know the grading of hadith. It is from the Book of Tribulations (Kitab al-Fitan). It didn’t have a number, but it is this:

Sa‘id ibn al-Musayyib: There will be tribulation in the Levant, the first part of which is child’s play; every time it is quiet from one side, then it flares up on the other, but it will not end until a herald from the heavens calls out: “Is not the commander so-and-so!” Ibn al-Musayyib intertwined his hands until they were shaking, then said: “This commander is true!” three times.

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate.

I pray you are in good faith and health. Thank you for your question.

The above is a statement of Sa‘id Ibn al-Musayyib (Allah be pleased with him). He refers to the tribulations and trials in the Levant: Palestine, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, and certain adjacent areas.

This is not a hadith of the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace). However, other authentic hadiths support the statement’s general understanding. Nu‘aym ibn Hammad mentions it in Kitab al-Fitan. The narrator in this chain has been declared weak by some hadith specialists and very weak according to others. [Nu‘aym Ibn Hammad, Kitab al-Fitan; ‘Abd al-Razzaq, Musannaf ‘Abdur Razzaq; Haythami, Majma‘ al-Zawa’id]
