Is Using Leather from a Non-Halal Cow Permissible If Tanned?
Answered by Ustadh Sufyan Qufi
Question
Is it permissible to use cow leather from a non-halal slaughtered cow if it has been tanned using natural, plant-based methods?
Answer
In the name of Allah, Most Compassionate, Most Merciful,
Yes, it is permissible to use the hide of a non-slaughtered animal if it has been properly tanned. [Shurunbulali, Nur al-Idah]
A plant-based method is a valid method of tanning according to the sacred law. [Ibid]
The Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace be upon him) has said: “Any hide that has been tanned is now pure.” [Tirmidhi]
And Allah knows best.
