Can I Charge A Huge Price For A Product?

Hanafi Fiqh

Answered by Shaykh Abdul-Rahim Reasat

Question

Assalamu ‘alaykum.

My customers usually haggle, so I priced something higher than usual, and someone bought it without haggling. Was my sale halal?

Answer

Wa ‘alaykum assalam wa rahmatullah wa barakatuh.

I pray you are well.

Yes, your sale was halal. You do not need to worry. It is permissible to sell a product for a profit as long as you were honest, and the customer was happy to buy it after knowing all the relevant details. (Maydani, Lubab)

Selling something at a very high price that will cause harm to customers, or when there is a monopoly on a product is wrong. That should be avoided. Be honest, always. The Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) said, “The trustworthy, honest trader will be with the Prophets, the Absolutely -Truthful (Siddiqin), the martyrs, and the righteous on the Day of Judgement.“ (Tirmidhi). They are excellent company, and the rewards of those with them will be great.

May Allah grant you the best of both worlds.
