Can One Earn Money Through TikTok Livestreams?

Hanafi Fiqh

Answered by Mawlana Ilyas Patel

Question

Is it halal for someone to make money from Tiktok live (logically, the content produced is halal, e.g., the recitation of the Quran), given that the money does not come from advertising but from donations made voluntarily by the public?

Answer

I pray you are in good faith and health. Thank you for your question.

Your activism around social media is praiseworthy. If you are reciting the Quran yourself, then it will be disliked. If you are uploading others’ recitations, then it will be permissible.

Learn the Quran, But Do Not Earn Livelihood Through it

Mu’awiya (Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace) said, “Learn the Quran. When you have learned it, do not exaggerate with it, do not abandon it, do not earn your livelihood from it, and do not accumulate wealth from it.” [Musnad Ahmad]

Teaching the Quran

The teaching of the Quran as well as other acts of worship, should be done solely for the pleasure of Allah. However, it is permissible to teach the Quran and earn an income through that.
