Does Singing a Song that Contains Certain Words Count as a Divorce?

Hanafi Fiqh

Answered by Mawlana Ilyas Patel

Question

I have been married for three months. During the first month, I was frustrated. I feared that I would not last longer. That time, I sang this song many times.

“If you wanna go, then I’ll be so lonely

If you’re leaving, baby, let me down slowly

Let me down, down, let me down, down, let me down

Let me down, down, let me down, down, let me down

If you wanna go, then I’ll be so lonely

If you’re leaving, baby, let me down slowly”

Will it be counted as divorce?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate

I pray you are in good faith and health. Thank you for your question, and many congratulations and blessings in your marriage.

The above will not count as a divorce as it is a song, and you were listening to it being frustrated. Don’t worry; marriage is a lifelong journey, and you will slowly settle, and your relationship will grow in sha Allah. Speak to your spouse openly and try to understand each other.

I would like you and your wife to continually perform two rakats of Prayer of Need (Salat al-Haja) and pray to Allah Most High to create harmony, love, and mutual and compromising understanding between you two.
