Is Buying an Item During a Christmas and Halloween Sale Permissible?

Hanafi Fiqh

Answered by Mawlana Ilyas Patel

Question

If someone buys a halal item on a Christmas or Halloween sale, is the purchase halal?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate

Purchasing items during religious or non-religious customary sales of any faith is deemed acceptable. The critical determinant is your intention, which should be to acquire what is economically available to you without any underlying objective of supporting or denoting the occasion’s significance.

Actions Are by Their Intentions

It is taken from the well-known hadith in which the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) said, “Verily actions are by their intentions, and one shall only have that which one intended.” [Bukhari; Muslim]

The scholars stated something implicit in this hadith: “Verily actions are rewarded and judged by their intentions, and one shall only have the reward for that which one intended.”

One of the foremost legal maxims is, There is no reward without intention.” This is one of the most repeated and well-known of legal maxims. [Ibn Nujaym, Ashbah wa’l Nadha’ir]
