Is It Obligatory To Turn Our Head to Our Right When Uttering Taslim?

Question

Is it obligatory to turn our head to our right in taslim? What if I say the taslim and then move my head to the right?

Answer

In the name of Allah, Most Compassionate, Most Merciful,

I pray this finds you in the best of states.

It is not obligatory but sunna to turn your head to your right when uttering the first taslim and to turn your head to your left for the second taslim. [Shurunbulali, Nur al-Idah]

Indeed the Prophet (peace and blessings upon him) used to do so to the point that someone behind him could see the whiteness of his cheeks. [Sunan al-Bayhaqi]

Making a habit to fail to do so without an excuse is sinful.

And Allah knows best.
