Is It Permissible for Men to Wear Gold Cuff Links?

Hanafi Fiqh

Answered by Shaykh Yusuf Weltch

Question

Is it permissible for men to wear gold cuff links in the Hanafi Madhhab (or in any madhhab)? Would they be considered a type of jewelry?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate

If one owns shirts that do not have buttons on the cuffs of the sleeves, the use of cufflinks in such a case is not considered jewelry. However, if the cufflinks are gold, it is prohibited for a man to use them as gold is prohibited for men to use. [Nahlawi, al-Durar al-Mubaha]

This ruling is not restricted to jewelry as it applies to anything that is directly used such as utensils, cups, dishes, etc…  [Ibid.]

Hope this helps
